Chemistry Core Curriculum - Fundamentals For Every Student

Chemistry Core Curriculum - Fundamentals For Every StudentThe chemistry core curriculum is an important part of a comprehensive science education. What it is, exactly, is the bedrock of all sciences - it's the foundation that gives them substance. In fact, in most science classes, including introductory chemistry and upper-level chemistry, you'll find a solid understanding of the basic principles of these sciences and the rules that govern them. That's what makes this core curriculum so valuable to students.Without this foundation, students would be missing out on the very foundation that makes them well rounded and capable of progressing in their field, building a solid understanding of the world around them. We all know that without a solid understanding of the basics, you can't achieve anything significant in your studies. That's why schools are required to include the core curriculum in the beginning of all science classes.Chemistry, after all, can never be taught in a day. There are no simple lessons to learn, and even basic concepts can be so involved that students simply cannot absorb them all in one class. Instead, the class should take the time to explain everything, covering the key points of the subject in a logical progression.Although there are different aspects of chemistry, the core curriculum covers all of them. It's up to the teacher to decide which concepts are included, but generally all of them are. The most basic one is the element itself, of course, the chemical properties that make up a solid or liquid.Once you understand the properties of one element, you're on your way to understanding the other elements as well. At this point, you'll understand how atoms form and how electrons flow. You'll also understand what chemistry is all about.Chemistry is very important to the many fields that deal with it. You'll find that there are plenty of applications for studying chemistry that you can find in every corner of the world. For example, in med icine, the study of chemicals and related materials has aided thousands of scientists in their work.Scientists also use chemistry as a means of understanding how to produce foods that are both safe and nutritious. As we all know, if there's something bad about an element, it will inevitably lead to a dangerous compound if it's used in food. By finding out how to properly control the properties of certain elements, scientists can always have the advantage.Other applications of chemistry abound in many different ways. Each year, scientists all over the world use chemistry as a basis for their research. This helps bring to light all the ways that chemistry can be applied to the world.

How I Got a Presidential Press Pass

How I Got a Presidential Press Pass My first presidential press pass deserved a selfie moment! As my senior year of college comes to a close, I have had to say goodbye to the activities I have become immersed in over the last four years. Amongst these activities is student journalism, something I have become particularly attached to. On campus, I am a reporter and editor for the Gettysburg College newspaper, the Gettysburgian, as well as the campus editor for Gettysburg’s branch of Uloop News. I love unearthing stories and crafting articles. My keyboard has been my window to the world. Regrettably, as I plan on pursing a career in veterinary medicine this will be the end of my journalism career for the near future. I am a bone-fide over achiever involved in far too many activities to list and as I get ready for the real world I have come to realize that it is time to start focusing on my career goals (scary stuff for all the seniors out there!).  As such, saying goodbye to reporting has been particularly bitter sweet. Nonetheless, I didn’t just want to say goodbye to journalism like I said goodbye to my other campus activities. I wanted to go out with a bang. I wrote double the stories I usually write and covered more than my normal range of topics. But I wanted something more. I wanted to find a hard hitting story that would get people talking. When presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders announced he was coming to Gettysburg I knew I had found my story! In preparation for the Pennsylvania primaries Senator Sanders made his way to the Gettysburg campus to share the “Bern” with the Burg residents. When the email with the announcement went out to the Gettysburg campus, the Facebook chat my other newspaper editors share immediately blew up. For a small campus that hasn’t seen much action since the Battle of Gettysburg ended in 1863, I knew something exciting must have been happening when my phone began pinging out of control. Immediately, questions began to raise over who would get a coveted press pass to cover the event. As sports editor, my chance at getting that press pass was about as far from reality as Donald Trump becoming the Republican nomineeâ€"oh wait that did happen! But I wasn’t letting that stop me. I emailed the campaign directly and waited for my response. My hopes began to sink as the event drew closer and my fellow editors shared their excitement over receiving their security clearance and press passes to represent their various other roles on campus. When I woke up on Friday morning the day of the event, however, I was presently surprised by a confirmation email guaranteeing me a press passâ€"a real press pass! My Rory Gilmore journalism dream had been fulfilled! I was being given exclusive access to cover a real event â€" a national news story â€" and I wasn’t just getting clearance from the college but from the Secret Service and a Presidential campaign press secretary! My adventure didn’t stop there. The event began in the afternoon with the last admittance time for press at 1:30 p.m. Unfortunately for me, as this is the end of the school year, Friday was also the day to hang the photos for my Art Studio senior project. I finished hanging the photos at 1:10 p.m. Giving me just 20 minutes to print my newspaper credentials, grab my camera, and make my way over to the gym. As I arrived at the event I had just 3 minutes to spare. I approached the side doors only to be turned away by two police officers and a Secret Service agent. I was told the gym was filled and the doors were shut. I walked away in dismay. In a panic, somewhere from deep down inside of me, came a very assertive version of myself that I haven’t seen before and I doubt I’ll see again any time soon. I walked right back up to the police officer and insisted I must be allowed in as I had a pre-approved press pass. I waived my badge at the officer and asserted my right as a journalist under the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution. With 1 minute left to spare I was told I could try the backdoor of the gym but only if I went two blocks around following the barricade. I ran as fast as I could in and made it just in time. The glorious “media entrance” sign was like a beacon of hope at the end of my tunnel! I walked in and was handed my press pass after confirming my ID. If this isn’t the coolest thing you’ve seen you are seriously lacking common sense. My Bernie Sanders and Gettysburgian press pass. I was then patted down by two Secret Service agents as another agent took apart my camera. The Secret Service security check in. And then I was home free! I was directed down a media only hallway and the fun began. The press ONLY entrance. As I entered the gym looking up at the crowd of fellow students and town residents I realized I had the spot everyone wanted. I was at ground level with a roped off section giving me access to all sides of the stage so I could get the best coverage possible. It was a real media event and for once I was being treated like being a reporter mattered. Up close and personal with the candidate himself. I found a central spot right between the Washington Post and NBC teams. National news reporters gearing up for the event. My view was perfect and I had access to all the tools I needed. The campaign press secretary whirled about making sure all of the reporters had the information they required. Center stage at the Bernie Sanders town hall. All that was left was to wait for the candidate himself. The crowd was pumped with enthusiasm. They felt the Bern! The Gettysburg crowd showing their Bernie support. And Bernie didn’t disappoint! He hit home with the college aged demographic notorious for supporting his campaign. The man, the legend, Senator Bernie Sanders. It was a magical journalism experience all around. I even capped the day off by grabbing myself a Birdie Sanders button, even if I’m not a supporter myself. Vendors set up to sell Bernie gear outside the gym. The most popular item? A Birdie Sanders button! So my journalism career came to an end with a bang. I’ve climbed up the ranks of the campus newspaper from paper delivery girl to editor. It has been a marvelous journey worthy of all the late nights, eleventh-hour stories, and panicked texts for last-minute quotes. I’ve become a better writer, team-player, and editor. The skills I have learned will aid me in whatever job I end up in. But more important, the moments and people I have met along the way will be something I cherish for the rest of my life! Signing off for now but not forever! -Bethany

A Brief Overview of Three Types of Chemistry

A Brief Overview of Three Types of ChemistryThere are three main types of chemistry that can be studied at a college or high school. The student may choose to focus on one type of chemistry or choose to pursue all three types of chemistry as part of their studies. In the US, there are two types of chemistry courses, Introductory Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry. The first type of chemistry course is an introduction to the subject which covers fundamental concepts and gives the student an overview of chemistry. The second type of chemistry course is the intermediate course in the Intermediate program. In this course, students will learn to study chemistry and create chemical reactions. Students taking this course will study the chemical structure and properties and chemical equilibrium. It also includes instruction on basic lab work, topics of typical laboratory experiments, and laboratory design. The third type of chemistry course is called experimental chemistry. It can be taken at th e high school level or at the college level. Students who will pursue this course will learn about the use of the laboratory in chemistry and will be involved in the performance of experiments. Students may be required to conduct several experiments under the guidance of a professional scientist. In order to obtain a grade for this course, the student must perform a certain number of experiments and analyze the results. Before going to college or high school, students should take laboratory classes. These classes provide students with the chance to practice all the skills that they have learned while studying chemistry. Students should begin taking laboratory classes at the age of thirteen. While in high school, the student can choose to take classes in mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, or other subjects that interest them.Students that are interested in taking Advanced Chemistry can decide which type of chemistry they wish to pursue by examining the requirements in their sta te. There are some requirements for chemistry at the college level that students must meet before they can apply to college. Therequirements for chemistry at the college level include high school mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, and English as a second language. At the college level, students can choose to be in a science, social science, or mathematics major.Students that choose to major in science must choose an area that has research interests in order to get a degree in this field. Students should decide on a science or social science major that has research interests in order to make the best choice for them when choosing a major.Students that are planning to enter college and start learning chemistry as soon as possible can go through high school or even elementary school. Some classes may not be available and it may be difficult to get a student to take an advanced class. However, by taking a couple of these chemistry classes at an early age, students can save a lot of money in the long run by having a well-rounded science or math education.

Molality

Molality Molality The concept of molality arises while studying solutions. Molality is also called as molal concentration. A solution is formed when a solute is dissolved in a solvent. Solute is a substance which is dissolved in another substance during the formation of a solution. Solute are usually in smaller quantities. The solvent is a substance which dissolves solute in itself during the formation of the solution. The solvent is usually in larger quantities when compared to the solute. For example, salt is dissolved in water here salt is the solute and water is the solvent. Sugar dissolve in juice, here sugar is the solute and juice is the solvent. Hence when a solute dissolves in a solvent a solution is formed. The solutions in which the solute is evenly distributed throughout the solvent is called as a homogeneous solution. The amount of solute dissolved in the solvents, and the solution formed can all be expressed in terms of concentrations. There are different ways in which the concentration is estimated such as molarity, molality, formality, percent composition and many more. Molality definition: The amount of solute dissolved in one kilogram of the solvent is defined as the molality of the solution. The amount of solute is expressed in moles. Therefore the molal concentration of a solution is the moles of solute in kilogram of the solvent. To find the Molality the required information is Moles of the solute used to form a solution. Amount of the solvent expressed in kilograms. Hence the formula for Molality can be expressed as follows: Units and symbol: The molality of a solution is expressed as m. The units for expressing the molality equals moles/kilograms or mol/kg. Question: Find the molality of 5 moles of Nacl mixed in 2000 grams for the solvent? Here the moles of the solute = 5 moles. The amount of the solvent = 2000 grams. Expressing the solvent in Kilograms = 2000/1000 = 2Kg. Hence using the formula for calculating Molality gives: Simplifying the calculation, Molality = 2.5 m. Question: Find the number or moles of FeO dissolved in 1.5 kg of solvent, if the molality of the solution if 0.3m. Here, the amount of the solvent = 1.5 Kg. Molality of the solvent used = 0.3 m. Hence rearranging the Molality formula for calculating the moles of the solute: This gives Moles of solute = 0.3 x 1.5 = 4.5 moles of Feo. Question: Find the amount of the solvent if 0.24 moles of the solute is dissolved to obtain a molality of 0.48m? Here, the number of moles of the solute = 0.24. The molality of the solution = 0.48 m. Hence rearranging the molality formula for calculating the mass of the solvent gives: The amount of the solvent = 1/2Kg = 0.5 Kg. Finding the moles of the solute: In a few questions the amount of the solute is given, in such cases the moles of the solute need to be calculated before using the molality formula. Here is how the moles of the solute can be calculated: Question: Calculate the molality when 20 grams of KCl is dissolved in 400 gm of the solvent? Mass of solute = 20 grams. Molar mass or molecular weight of KCl = Atomic mass unit of (K + Cl) = 39.0983 + 35.453 = 74.5513 g/mol = 74.6 g/mol (approx.) Moles of KCl = 20/74.6 = 0.27 moles. Amount of solvent in Kg = 400/1000 = 0.4 Kg. Using the molality formula: Therefore, molality of the given solution = 0.27/0.4 = 0.675 m Question: What is the molality of the solution when 15 grams of Na2CO3 is dissolved in a 0.25 kg of solvent to form a solution? Given is the mass of Sodium Carbonate = 15 grams. The number of moles of Na2CO3 is required for finding the molality of the solution. The Molar mass of Sodium Carbonate Na2CO3 = 2 (Na) + C + 3 (O). Refer the periodic table for the atomic mass unit for Na, C and O. Molar mass of Na2CO3 = 2 (22.989770) + 12.0107 + 3 (15.9994) = 105.98844 g/mol = 106 g/mol (approx.) Moles of Sodium Carbonate Na2CO3 = 15/106 = 0.14 Using the Molality formula Hence the molality = 0.14/0.25 = 0.56 m Difference between Molarity and Molality: Molarity and molality are both used to express the concentrations of a given solution. Molarity is the number of moles of solute dissolved in one liter of the solution. Molarity is also called as the molar concentration of the solution. Molarity of a substance gives the concentration with respect to the total solution whereas the molality gives the concentration with respect to the amount of solvent. The units for expressing molarity is mol/L or M. The formula used to calculate the Molarity of a solution is: Another very useful measuring unit used while solving questions related to concentrations is density. Density of a given solution is mass of the substance per unit volume. The units for expressing density are g/ml. The formula for calculating density is: Following are very unique and useful solved examples involving molality and molarity. Question: The molality of a solution formed by dissolving NaCl in a solvent is 0.56m. The density of the solution is 1.8g/ml. What is the molar concentration of the solution formed? The molality of the solution = 0.56m. This implies 0.56 moles of a solute NaCl is dissolved in 1 kg of the solvent. Moles of NaCl = 0.56; Molar mass of NaCl = Atomic weight of (Na + Cl) = (22.989770 + 34.453) = 58.44277 g/mol = 58.44g/mol (approx.) Using the moles formula, mass of NaCl dissolved = 0.56 x 58.44 = 32.73 gm (approx.) Mass of solution = Mass of Solute + Mass of Solvent = 32.73 grams + 1000 grams = 1032.73 grams Density of the solution given = 1.8g/ml. Using the density formula . Volume of the solution = 1.8 x 1032.73 = 1858.91 ml = 1.85891 L = 1.86 L (approx.). Using the molarity formula: Therefore, Molarity of the solution = 0.56/1.86 = 0.30 M Question: The molality of a solution formed by dissolving KI in a solvent is 1.2m. The density of the solution is 2.5 g/ml. What is the molar concentration of the solution formed? The molality of the solution = 1.2m. This implies 1.2 moles of a solute KI is dissolved in 1 kg of the solvent. Moles of KI = 1.2; Molar mass of KI = Atomic weight of (K + I) = (39.0983 + 126.90447) = 166.00277 g/mol = 166.00g/mol (approx.) Using the moles formula, mass of KI dissolved = 1.2 x 166.00 = 199.20 gm Mass of solution = Mass of Solute + Mass of Solvent = 199.20 grams + 1000 grams = 1199.20 grams Density of the solution given = 2.5g/ml. Using the density formula . Volume of the solution = 2.5 x 1199.20 = 2998 ml = 2.998 L. Using the molarity formula: Therefore, Molarity of the solution = 1.2/2.998 = 0.40 M
